THE VOICE IN MY HEAD

The voice in my head
Fills me with negatives:

“You fall to pieces every time
They put pressure on you.
You fail to see it’s not a crime
To state your point of view.”

“Fear of failure, fear of success,
You’ve got ‘em both in spades.
How can you think with all this mess?
Your brain’s the Everglades!”

Though I try my best
To give it a rest,
The voice in my head
Just won’t go to bed.

“You think you can, I know you can’t;
Look at your track record.
You reap those sorry seeds you plant
From your past so checkered.”

“Don’t ever try, and you can’t fail;
Nobody will judge you.
Don’t pay attention to detail;
Live life without a clue.”

Though I try my best
To give it a rest,
The voice in my head
Just won’t go to bed.

“Don’t regret the road not taken,
Burning bridges you’ve crossed,
All those lovers you’ve forsaken,
Opportunities lost.”
“Your glass is more than half empty,
There are no cheering crowds.
There’s no pot of gold so tempting
And no silver-lined clouds.”

Though I try my best
To give it a rest,
The voice in my head
Just won’t go to bed.

“Don’t mind me now – you go to sleep,
No sense staying awake.
You have no promises to keep,
No thrilling risks to take.”

“If you should die
Before you wake …”
