Lyrics

SERPENTS OF FIRE

Serpents of fire danced higher and higher,
While down below, way down in the choir,
One voice sang above all the rest.
One voice that was truly blessed;
One voice sang and sweetly confessed:

Someone ate the fruit from that tree;
Someone killed his brother so willingly;
Someone killed God’s only Son at Calvary;
Someone needs God’s mercy,
And that someone is me.

Serpents of fire are dancing down below.
Little do they think; little do they know.
They certainly put on a splendid show,
With their icy hearts and their eyes all aglow.
Those serpents of fire who dance down below.

Someone ate the fruit from that tree;
Someone killed his brother so willingly;
Someone killed God’s only Son at Calvary;
Each serpent hisses, “You can’t blame me.
I gave out no kisses at Gethsemane!”

Three men of theft hung on wooden crosses,
With no time left to count their losses.
One said, “Christ, get me out of this jam.”
One was the Sacred, Sacrificial Lamb;
He told the third, “This day you’ll be where I am.”

Serpents of fire are dancing here on earth.
They’ll dance at your grave; they danced at your birth.
They hope you’ll dance to the tune they are playing;
They hope you’ll fall for every false saying;
They hope you’ll call it a waste of time praying.
But I hope your eyes can see all that is true:
Someone needs God’s mercy,
And that someone is you.
Someone needs God's mercy,
And that someone is me.
