Lyrics

SOLDIER NUMBER THREE

A man rode into town
Making outrageous claims.
He sure did draw a crowd;
He was taking down names.

He had some kind of book,
A book of life and death.
I didn’t stop to look;
I didn’t waste my breath.

You’ve seen me in the movies,
Standing there at Calvary.
You’ve seen me in the movies;
I am soldier number three.

His sermons weren’t bad;
I caught a parable or two.
But you know that I had
More important things to do.

I gambled with my men -
Guess I gambled with my soul.
I should have known it then;
Thought I was on a roll.

You’ve seen me in the movies,
Standing there at Calvary.
You’ve seen me in the movies;
I am soldier number three.

The clear sky grew so dark,
And the earth began to shake.
Didn’t hear His last remark -
I was busy, for Heaven’s sake.

Didn’t have a star part,
But I played out my role.
Felt a fire in my heart;
Felt a stirring in my soul.

It was when He did rise,
While I guarded His grave,
That I came to realize:
It was me He came to save.

You’ve seen me in the movies,
Standing there at Calvary.
You’ve seen me in the movies;
I am soldier number three.
